Blade Runners

Dutch designer Iris van Herpen and recent recipient of the prestigious 2014 Andam fashion award, lives in a curiously futuristic, brave new world with designs that consistently challenge the norm and fly in the face of fashion convention. Van Herpen regularly works with other-worldly materials that resemble imaginary alien skin and beautiful, high-shine suiting sleek enough for outer space outings. Her radical, high-precision silhouettes with strange, unfamiliar surface textures ripple and undulate, creating new non-human forms of dress. But Van Herpen’s look wouldn’t be complete without her outrageous, armor-like take on footwear that transforms a structured, encased foot and leg into bizarre extraterrestrial-like limbs suitable for one’s nightly walk on the moon.
